TALWANI, Manik, Rice Univ, 6100 Main St, Houston, TX 77005-1892, manik@rice.edu.

Detailed examination of the U.S.East coast margin crust raises the following questions:

What is transitional crust?

How much thinning goes on before the crust breaks?

What is the role of Seaward Dipping Reflectors on continental margins?

What lies below the Seaward Dipping Reflectors?

How do you explain magnetic anomalies on continental margins?

Are salt bodies on margins confined to continental crust?

What is the importance of Seaward Dipping Reflectors in formulating a strategy for exploration hydrocarbons?
