A six-week geologic enrichment program was designed and then implemented into the third grade classes at the Jefferson Elementary School in Utica, New York. Varying aspects of geoscience, with a focus on the marine environment, were introduced through a series of topics that included world oceans, estuaries and lagoons, ocean bottom features, the beach, marine mammals and marine pollution. Connection with the material was facilitated through demonstrations, worksheets, supporting materials and discussions that encouraged active participation from all students. Engagement in science was achieved through a self-contained curriculum based upon the marine environment and an active learning approach.
