ENVIRONMENTAL MAGNETISM IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC: A JOHN ANDREWS INNOVATION

John Andrews is among the first glacial-marine scientists to apply environmental magnetic techniques to environmental interpretations. Especially with magnetic susceptibility, he demonstrated that these methods are valuable tools for correlating between cores over large geographic regions, determining sediment provenance, finding Heinrich layers in deep-sea sediments, etc. In this presentation, I will present the results of sediment-magnetic analyses on sediment cores from the Labrador and Scotian Shelves. The results from the Labrador Shelf are used to estimate sediment provenance, especially related to the Dubawnt red rocks, and carbonates of the Hudson Strait. In the Emerald Basin, Scotian Shelf, these data are used to estimate provenance from the Scotian mainland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Both data sets are placed within the deglacial pattern of the Laurentide ice sheet, especially eveidence of the final collapse at ca. 8 ka.
