GEOARCHAEOLOGY ON RIDGES BASIN
|
ANDERSON, Kirk C., Quaternary Sciences, Northern Arizona University, box 6013, Flagataff, AZ 86011, kirk.anderson@nau.edu. Archaeological and geoarchaeological studies in Ridges Basin indicate a period of occupation limited to the late Baskemaker and early PI periods. Several theories have been suggested for the reasons of the limit on human occupation, particularly limits of resources, agricultural productivity, or environmental change. Recent studies have only begun to synthesis the existing data and to undertake new investigations to better understand the interactions between the people and their environment during the crucial period of early agriculture. Studies of site density, soils, geomorphic setting, and ages of alluvial fans are integral to determining the reasons for the short period of habitation in this area.
