A COMPENDIUM OF WEB-BASED RESOURCES FOR TEACHING STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY

KIRK, Karin B., Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT 59717, kkirk@montana.edu, MOGK, David W., Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State Univ, Bozeman, MT 59717, and TEWKSBURY, Barbara J., Department of Geology, Hamilton College, 198 College Hill Rd, Clinton, NY 13323-1218

A variety of pedagogical resource collections were developed in support of the NAGT On the Cutting Edge Teaching Structural Geology in the 21st Century Workshop, and are available through the workshop web site. The collections include instructional activities, internet resources, maps, articles and analog materials that can be used to illustrate principles of structural geology. The activities collection includes classroom, laboratory and field exercises. These exercises are ready to use or may be modified to suit a particular course, and are complete with downloadable files that include teaching tips, assessment instruments and other supporting materials. Web sites pertinent to teaching structural geology have been assembled in the internet resources collection, and are browsable by topic. There is a list of analog materials such as clay or jelly that can help students understand the behavior of materials and the development of structures. Bibliographic collections of geologic maps and journal articles that are useful for teaching at the undergraduate level are provided. Several working groups were formed at the workshop to further develop activities and resources covering a range of topics within structural geology. Faculty are invited to join the working groups to contribute to or review works in progress. A database of geophysical equipment and spatial analysis tools that are available for use at various universities is under development. Contributions from the community to all of the collections are encouraged, and can be done via on-line forms for submitting information and uploading files. The workshop website is: http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/structure04.
