LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR A GIS/RS SYSTEM FOR SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

ST. CLAIR, Eric V., Biology and Geology, Saint Louis Univ, 3507 Laclede Ave, Macelwane Hall, Saint Louis, MO 63103, stclaiev@slu.edu

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) give a scientist many powerful tools with which to analyze, assess and manipulate spatial datasets. From a geological standpoint, these datasets are wide ranging and include topographic, geologic, seismic, satellite imagery, hazards and petrological data. An analysis of a completed GIS dataset is completed quickly when compared to the time it requires to assemble one. The focus is on the preparation and assembly of the various sources of data with a review of the software and hardware scheme used rather than the completed GIS dataset.
