GEOLOGY OF THE KANARRA CREEK DRAINAGE BASIN, KANARRAVILLE, IRON COUNTY, UTAH

Kanarra Creek drainage basin is located directly east of Kanarraville, Iron County, Utah. The creek is oriented east to west and dissects a portion of the Kanarra fold. The fold is oriented NE-SW and extends approximately 26 km, from Spring Creek Canyon to Fiddlers Canyon, Iron County, Utah. In the study area, the fold manifests itself as an antiform syncline, consisting of the overturned beds of the Moenkopi, Chinle, Moenave, and Kayenta Formations. Folding is a result of the late Cretaceous age Sevier orogenic event. The massive Navajo Sandstone Formation (702 m) acts as an un-deformed buttress to the west to east compression of the thrust sheet. Kanarra Creek has been established along a series of normal, down to the south faults that manifest them-selves in apparent left lateral slippage. Different degrees of competence prevented the beds from moving as a cohesive unit. The series of normal faults and overturned beds is indicative of the regions response to deviatoric stress.
