EARTH2CLASS: TRAINING TEACHERS, SHARING RESEARCH, PROVIDING WEB RESOURCES

PASSOW, Michael J., Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers, Lamont-Doherty and Teachers College, Columbia Univ., New York, NY and White Plains Middle School, Rt. 9W, Borehole Research Building, Palisades, NY 10964, michael@earth2class.org, ITURRINO, Gerardo, Borehole Research Group, Lamont-Dohety Earth Observatory, Rt. 9W, Palisades, NY 10964, ASSUMPÇÃO, Cristiana M., Colegio Banderantes, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and BAGGIO, Frederico D., Baggio Technologies, Sao Paulo, Brazil

The Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University continue to provide an exemplary model for training K – 12 geoscience teachers through interactions with research scientists and a wide range of web-based resources for students and educators. Monthly workshops bring classroom teachers from the New York City metropolitan area and elsewhere together with LDEO investigators to learn about cutting-edge investigations about diverse aspects of the Earth System, thus providing an effective format for broader impact. The E2C web site, www.earth2class.org, provides archived versions of the Workshops, included links to the introductory presentations, scientists' research, curricular materials related to the theme, and additional resources. Other sections of the website present curriculum materials for middle and high school Earth Science students and teachers, links to national and state Science Education Standards, and many other useful resources. E2C has been supported by an NSF Geoscience Education grant, and will soon begin a new phase as it completes its tenth series of Workshops. The E2C program has created one model to help K – 12 teachers gain meaningful understanding of modern geoscience discoveries.
