PRELIMINARY GEOLOGIC MAP OF PART OF THE BLUE RIDGE IN NORTHERN GEORGIA: PART I, THE MAP

CRAWFORD, Ralph F., The Geologic Mapping Institute, 1297 Briardale Lane, Atlanta, GA 30306, crawford@sprintmail.com and HIGGINS, Michael W., The Geologic Mapping Institute, 1752 Timber Bluff Drive, Clayton, GA 30525-6011 We have compiled our geologic mapping in the Blue Ridge in northern Georgia into ESRI's ArcGis 9.1 using 1:24,000-scale seamless digital topographic bases from Topozone.com. Geologic mapping was at scales ranging from 1:6,000 or more detailed, to 1:24,000-scale done in detailed reconnaissance. Detailed reconnaissance means that every road and trail has been mapped, but not all streams nor contacts have been walked. Our mapping philosophy has been to first map an area in detailed reconnaissance and then follow up with detailed and extremely detailed geologic mapping where problem areas or societal needs exist, or where detailed reconnaissance or even detailed mapping do not match the complexity of the rocks. Geologic mapping over a period of 30 years has allowed us to “follow the bulldozers” in an area of constant development. The area of this poster is the Blue Ridge from the Cartersville area to the north and northeast as far as 34º 30' N lat. It is a map of the Corbin massif, “Murphy” marble belt, Dahlonega shear zone/fault zone/gold belt, Allatoona thrust fault, and the mass of Ocoee Supergroup metasedimentary rocks between the marble belt and the Dahlonega zone. It covers all or parts of the Acworth, Kennesaw, Allatoona Dam, South Canton, Canton, Birmingham, White East, Waleska, Ball Ground West, Ball Ground East, Matt, Coal Mountain, Fairmount, Ludville, Jasper, Nelson, Juno, and Dawsonville 7.5-min quadrangles. Areas mapped in extreme detail are: the northern Acworth, and Allatoona Dam quadrangles; the Jasper and Nelson quadrangles; and the Canton area.
