DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WIDE AREA GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY - LESSONS IN THE FIELD
|
PETERSON, Staffan D., Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University, 423 n. fess, bloomington, IN 47408, stapeter@indiana.edu Understanding the spatial configuration of prehistoric communities continues to be a major task for the field archaeologist. Where local conditions are favorable, mapping such sites can be accomplished via the imaging of near-surface magnetic anomalies. This paper presents some aspects of a 32 ha. (~80 acre) magnetic gradiometer survey of a Mississippian Culture (ca. 1000-1400 AD) town on the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana USA. The evolution of sampling design and survey execution over the course of the project is presented within a cost/benefit framework.
