LEGAL AND POPULAR CONCEPTIONS OF SCIENCE
|
MCLARTY, Colin S., Philosophy, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH 44106, cxm7@case.edu Legal decisions in cases dealing with creationism often rely in part on how science is defined or what is accepted by scientists as constituting science as a field of knowledge. Popular notions of science often clash with both the legal understanding of science and that of scientists. The public often confuses concepts of mathematical proof with standards of scientific practice. This paper will offer comparisons of popular, legal, and practitioners' views.
