DEVELOPING A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (PDP) FOR PROMOTION AND TENURE PORTFOLIOS

In 1990, Ernest L. Boyer wrote Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate and examined three central questions. What does it mean to be a scholar? What is the nature of scholarship? What activities should be defined as scholarship? In the following 25 years many universities have come to define the following forms of scholarly activity: Teaching Scholarship, Research Scholarship and Service Scholarship and many have chosen to use these categories for promotion and tenure guidelines.

This presentation explores the how university faculty can develop a professional development plan that integrates educational organizations for Teaching Scholarship, Research Scholarship and Service Scholarship into a framework for building a well-balanced promotion and tenure portfolio. We will review the opportunities for publication, funding and leadership roles that university faculty members can assume in organizations such as National Association of Geoscience Teachers, National Earth Science Teachers Association, National Science Teachers Association, American Geological Institute, the Earth System Science Education Alliance and state and local organizations.
