MAKING HYDROLOGIC PREDICTIONS IN UNGAUGED BASINS IN NEW ENGLAND

Small experimental watersheds such as the Hubbard Brook Experiment Forest in NH are valuable for understanding hydrologic processes; however, there has been little progress in extrapolating this local knowledge and understanding gained from these well studied (or gauged) small scale watersheds to gauged and ungauged river basins. Professor Dingman at UNH made significant contributions along these lines in synthesizing hydrologic responses across New England. For example, he showed that mean basin elevation and other drainage basin characteristics could explain a variety of stream flow characteristics in the regional context. Building on the valuable work of Professor Dingman, this talk will explore the challenges and how we might proceed in hydrologic regionalization and prediction in ungauged basins in New England.
