THE USE OF HAZUS-MH FOR EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS PREPARATION IN CHARLESTON SC

FEMA's HAZUS-MH is a GIS-based hazard analysis program that allows planners to prepare What-if scenarios for various seismic events. This study presents the effects of five scenarios on Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties. The scenarios include a present day version of the 1886 event, as well as scenarios for 6.0 M and 5.0 M events. The final scenarios investigated show the sensitivity of the HAZUS model to the NEHRP soils parameters which control the shaking and damages algorithms in the program. Understanding how the model handles the various parameters will allow emergency managers to better plan for future events.
