Geochemical Signatures from Surface and Core Sediments, Tejocotal Reservoir, Hidalgo, Mexico. A Study on Environmental and Climatic Factors
|
JONATHAN, M.P. and RIVERA RIVERA, Denise Margarita, Centro de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Tierra y Materiales, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Ciudad Universitaria, Carretera Pachuca-Tulancingo Km.4.5, Pachuca, Hidalgo, 42184, Mexico, mpjonathan7@yahoo.com Surface and core sediments were collected from Tejocotal reservoir in Hidalgo State, Mexico to identify the geochemical process in sediments and further study on the environmental and climatic variations that has affected the reservoir. The sediments samples were analyzed for sediment texture, carbonates, OC, major and REE. The analytical data from core sediments indicates that the sediments have undergone intense chemical weathering due to the geochemical chemical process in the reservoir and also due to the process related to transportation and deposition. However, the surface sediments indicate that the sediments are not chemical weathered in relation to the core sediments and are also deposited in a fresh environment. The vertical distribution of elements in core samples indicates a significant depositional change in environment in both the core samples in the entrance of the reservoir and in the out gate indicating that they are closely related to the climatic variations in the study area. The above factors is very well supported by the Al normalized values indicating a change in deposition pattern in the reservoir. The distribution pattern of trace elements also suggests that some elements are enriched in the study area due to local contamination.
