The Texas Grenville Orogen, Llano Uplift, Texas

Primary Leader: Sharon Mosher
Leader(s): Jamie Levine, Mark Helper
Field Trip Description: The Llano Uplift of central Texas records the affects of Grenville orogensis along the southern margin of Laurentia. This trip examines 1) the lithotectonic domains comprising the uplift, including the Coal Creek, Packsaddle and Valley Spring domains that have been interpreted to represent an exotic island arc and dismembered ophiolite, telescoped basin sediments and a continental margin arc formed on Laurentian basement, respectively; 2) results of polyphase deformation at uppermost amphibolite facies, remnants of medium T eclogites, and the interplay between partial melting and deformation; and 3) syn- to post-tectonic granite plutons. The trip will include stops across the entire uplift including recently studied locations in the western uplift.
Field Trip will span: 2 days
Sponsor(s): Structural Geology and Tectonics Division
