7:30 AM-1:15 PM, George R. Brown Convention Center:

CANCELED: Soils and Geomorphology of the Texas Gulf Coastal Plain and Texas Shoreline with Special Emphasis on Hydrology, and Coastal Erosion

Primary Leader: C. T. Hallmark
Leader(s): Susan Casby-Horton
Field Trip Description: This field trip begins with erosion and deposition of coastal material along the barrier island, bay and coastal system, then examines the Quaternary and late Tertiary depositional history of the Texas Gulf Coastal Plain and the influence of parent sediments, relief, and time on soil formation and landscape hydrology. Soil morphology and soil-landscape relationships are demonstrated in a series of soil pits excavated across the coastal plain along a transect generally perpendicular to the Texas coast line and represents progressively older formations. Included in the stops will be Vertisols on the Beaumont Formation (Pleistocene age) and Fleming Formation (Miocene age), Alfisols on the Lissie Formation, and accumulations of pedogenic calcium carbonate on the Goliad Formation (Pliocene).
Field Trip will span: 3 days
Sponsor(s): SSSA Division of S-5 (Pedology); SSSA S880 Soils-Geomorphology Committee; GSA Division of Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology
