Geological and Geophysical R&D in the Oil and Gas Industry: A Tour of ExxonMobil and Shell Research Labs
|
Primary Leader: Steve Naruk
Leader(s): Peter Vrolijk, Lori Summa
Field Trip Description: This will be a brief tour of the ExxonMobil and Shell R&D labs that will provide an integrated, multidisciplinary view of geological and geophysical research in the oil and gas industry. The first stop will be 2 hours at the ExxonMobil Research Center virtual reality center, to provide an overview of how subsurface geological and geophysical data are combined and utilized to provide structural, stratigraphic, and fluid-content and -pressure interpretations. The second stop will be 2 hours at the Shell International EP research lab, touring the rock physics and geochemistry labs, showing how rock and fluid property measurements are made and integrated with the subsurface interpretations seen at the first stop. The presentations will be organized around a central theme (e.g., Structure, stratigraphy, and petroleum systems in toe-of-slope foldbelts) that will highlight the integrated multi-disciplinary nature of the R&D. The trip will leave from and return to the convention center, with ExxonMobil and Shell providing transportation at no cost to the participants. Students, faculty, and other professional geoscientists are all invited.
Field Trip will span: 1 day
