A Field Exercise on Groundwater Flow Using Seepage Meters and Mini-piezometers

Primary Leader: David R. Lee
Leader(s): Donald O. Rosenberry
Field Trip Description: This 1/2 day field trip to a site near Houston was prompted to provide a dynamic, field-based method for teaching earth science at the high school level. Participants will install seepage meters, see the change in volume of the attached thin-plastic bag and compare results obtained with miniature wells or piezometers that even high school students can install. Our hope is to provide teachers - and those who provide methods for teachers - a way to teach the basics of groundwater flow. The equipment is inexpensive and provides a direct and visual determination of an otherwise invisible phenomenon - groundwater flow. We will also show teachers how they may find suitable teaching sites near their schools and how they might introduce groundwater concepts and demonstrate the interconnectedness of ecosystem components in knee deep on the sand bottom of a beach or pond.
Field Trip will span: 1 day
