CANCELED: Sedimentology and Stratigraphy of Modern Coastal Plain Depositional System

Primary Leader: John Anderson
Leader(s): J. Michael Boyles, Daniel Schwartz, Mark Thomas
Field Trip Description: The focus of this field seminar will be to understand the sedimentology of various coastal environments and the stratigraphy of their deposits. This will be accomplished through field presentations and study of trenches and cores. Field observations will be integrated with results from other studies to build an understanding of the depositional stratigraphy. The principal concern will be to develop an understanding of what ends up being preserved in the ancient record. After an initial introduction to fluvial sedimentology, participants will investigate the stratigraphy of a modern point bar by digging trenches along the banks of the Brazos River. Numerous trenches will be dug on the point bar to better understand both the vertical and lateral variations in deposition. Brazos River deposits will then be investigated in a gravel quarry (depends on access to quarry) and in cores that have been taken through the deposits. The final stop will investigate an abandoned Brazos River channel belt. Brazos River delta formation and evolution will be discussed at Surfside Beach. Then the trip will focus its investigation on the stratigraphy of the deposits associated with a major marine transgression. Transgressive beach and barrier island deposits will be studied at Follets Island, San Luis Pass, and Galveston Island. The final stops will contrast the transgressive shoreline deposits with the progradational shoreface along Bolivar Peninsula.
Field Trip will span: 2 days
Sponsor(s): Shell International E&P
