Dealing with Active Gulf Coast Growth Faults

Primary Leader: Carl E. Norman
Leader(s): Richard G. Howe
Field Trip Description: This one-day trip will acquaint the participants with 4 well-exposed active faults, out of more than 350 that crop out in the Houston Metropolitan Area. An illustrated guidebook will serve to portray various methods for recognizing and mapping the faults, determining the extent of the zone of disturbed ground along them, and measuring their rates of movement. Field trip stops have been selected to illustrate the effects of fault movement on several types of engineered structures, as well as approaches to avoiding or mitigating structural distress. There will be open discussion of possible causes of the currently high rate of movement of many of the faults.
Field Trip will span: 1 day
Sponsor(s): Houston Geological Society
