Come Look at the Rocks: The University of Texas, Bureau of Economic Geologies Houston Research Center

Field Trip Description: Come take a look at a variety of spectacular cores illustrating various siliciclastic and carbonate depositional environments, such as deep-water mass transport deposits, paleo-karsts, valley fills, fluvial and shelf sandstones, and Cretaceous reefs – all of which are publicly available. The University of Texas, Bureau of Economic Geology's (BEG) Houston Research Center houses over 600,000 boxes of cores and cuttings from all over the world. It is one of three sample repositories operated by BEG. All material is publicly available and is searchable in an online database. This half-day field trip will include a tour of the research facility and as well as time spent examining the cores.
