In the Geologic Mapping Act of 1992, the USGS and the Association of American State Geologists were mandated by Congress to provide a National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB, http://ngmdb.usgs.gov) of standardized, spatial geoscience information that can be used to address societal issues and improve our base of scientific knowledge.
