DISCOVERING THE VALUE OF HISTORIC MATERIALS IN THE GEOSCIENCES

HUFFINE, Richard, U.S. Geological Library, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, MS 159, Reston, VA 20192 and ADAMO, Lisa, U.S. Geological Survey, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, MS 950, Reston, VA 20192, rhuffine@usgs.gov

Geoscience research is often called a "cumulative science" since the discoveries of today do not replace discoveries made by previous researchers. This suggests that current research efforts can and should consider the findings of prior research efforts - regardless of their age - and that new discoveries can be found through placing historic research outputs into modern contexts. This presentation will look at seminal works in the geosciences and identify approaches for the rediscovery of information lost in time and the pages of library books.
