NEW ONLINE TOOLS FOR GEOLOGIC GIGAPIXEL IMAGERY

BENTLEY, Callan, Geology, Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale, VA 22003 and COOPER, Gene, Four Chambers Studio, 128 Ebbetts Pass Road, Vallejo, CA 94589

In this digital poster we present new online methods for comparison, annotation, and exploration of geologic gigapixel imagery. Collaborative research between Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA)and GIGAmacro has led to development of a new online viewer with specific tools to aid in the classroom, research activities, and study of geologic specimens. The new viewing technology presents a range of new features including comparisons, annotations, sharing tools, and classroom tools for testing, identification, and understanding of geologic features in the imagery. We see this work having applications for both panoramic imagery of geologic locations as well as imagery at the macro / micro scale and we discuss the challenges, benefits, and wide ranging impact this new frontier in imaging holds in geology.
