ONBOARD OUTREACH OFFICERS: CONNECTING SHIPBOARD SCIENTISTS AND EDUCATORS TO DEVELOP SUCCESSFUL GEOSCIENCE BROADER IMPACT PROJECTS

KURTZ, Nicole, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, 61 Route 9W, Lamont-Doherty, Palisades, NY 10964

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is an international marine research collaboration that explores Earth's history and dynamics using ocean-going research platforms to recover data recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks and to monitor subseafloor environments. The JOIDES Resolution is the flagship vessel of IODP. The science party on a JOIDES Resolution expedition consists of 60 scientists and technicians and 65 crew members. The party is specific to each mission, with skills and science disciplines chosen especially to best achieve the mission’s goals. In addition to the scientists on board, each expedition sails 1-2 Onboard Outreach Officers who translate the exciting science happening onboard through the creation of blogs, videos, social networking sites, live ship-to-shore events and the development of educational resources to shore-based audiences. The partnership between outreach specialists and scientists continue long after the expedition returns to port. This author will present many successful educational resources developed by through this program and will highlight a specific successful broader impact collaboration between 2 microbiologists and an educator.
