MINERAL POTENTIAL EVALUATION FOR OLYMPIC DAM-KIRUNA DEPOSITS IN THE MANITOU AREA, GRENVILLE PROVINCE, QUEBEC: SYSTEMATIC MODELING OF GEOLOGICAL DATA BY GRID ANALYSIS

LAMOTHE, Daniel and BEAUMIER, Marc, Geologie Quebec, Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec, 5700 4th Ave. W, suite A-209, Charlesbourg, QC G1H 6R1, Canada, daniel.lamothe@mrn.gouv.qc.ca

Geologie Quebec has developed a new tool that allows the systematic evaluation, for a specific metallogenic model, the mineral potential of a map area on a reconnaissance or regional scale. This tool is a GIS-based database system called SPCPM, which uses a “knowledge-driven” approach to integrate through an additive process all the geological parameters pertinent to the model. SPCPM systematizes the various steps needed for the evaluation, such as database extraction, conversion of geological elements from vectorial to grid format, application of a subjective weighting procedure to each data set, spatial treatment of adjacent areas of favorability, and overlay combination. A color scheme specific to the model is applied to the resulting map to illustrate relative favorability.
