INTEGRATION OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION AT THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

PRENDEVILLE, Jewel C., Directorate for Geosciences, National Sci Foundation, 4201 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22230, jprendev@nsf.gov

The National Science Foundation has for some time focused strongly on the theme of integrating research and education. This theme applies both to students in all venues and to the public in general. Programs have been developed in the Directorate for Geosciences that support integrating research and education. Two such programs are the Geoscience Education Program (formerly Awards to Facilitate Geoscience Education) and the Opportunities to Enhance Diversity in the Geosciences. The latter focuses on increasing diversity in the geosciences and uses integration of research and education as one of the methods to implement this. Also available are supplements to basic research awards that facilitate the integration of research and education.
