OBSERVATION OF EXSOLUTION IN CLINOZOISITE

Rocks from Hebron, ME, contain two macroscopically distinct types of ubiquitously twinned clinozoisite--one pink and one colorless--along with zoisite and prehnite. Unmagnified, the pink and colorless clinozoisites appear to form discrete crystals up to 15 mm in length. With slight magnification, it becomes apparent that not all boundaries between colorless and pink crystals are sharp. Electron probe microanalysis and back-scattered electron imaging reveal a continuum of compositions from Cz96Ps4 to Cz90Ps10 (where Cz represents Fe-free epidote and Ps represents Al2Fe epidote) over distances of tens to hundreds of micrometers. The colorless regions are the more Fe-rich, and pink regions are slightly enriched in Mn (Mn<
