GEODISCOVERIES: AN INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA CD ROM FOR TEACHING INTRODUCTORY GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY
GeoDiscoveries is an interactive CD ROM developed with John Wiley & Sons, New York and Maris Multimedia, International, London & Moscow to accompany Geology Today, 2e. Based primarily on revised illustrations from the first edition by Barbara Murck and Brian Skinner, the new multimedia further draws from up-to-date resources in John Wiley & Sons libraries, Maris Multimedia, International programming, and new high-resolution digital topographies of Earth's surface. This digital book for Geology Today, 2e is accessed through interlinked Windows-based html formatted pages; icons in the hardbound book margins are designed to illustrate the interactive use of both generations of media. One of the central features of the media is the Revolving Globe, which illustrates the worldwide distribution of key geologic, geomorphic, and geographic phenomenon. Interactive buttons on the spinning Earth allow student access to chapter Presentations, Reviews, Interactivities, Animations, Simulations, and Test Banks. Chapter Presentations provide context and a short quiz-based review of material pertinent to the Interactivity exercises and test bank. Chapter Reviews, which cover all book topics and key words, also include additional test banks and feature articles; key words are highlighted and linked to an illustrated glossary, page index, or geologic time scale. Simulations are designed to allow student control of key variables in order to better understand physical mathematical concepts and related geological phenomenon. The Revolving Globe is additionally layered with high-resolution maps, which allow students a focused descent to Earth's surface to interactively explore key geologic and geomorphic provinces. The media also includes tables of physical constants; a Petroscope, for comparison of rocks and minerals in outcrop, hand sample, and thin section views; and an introduction to Earth System Science, which uses available resources (including published physical properties of reservoirs) to illustrate dynamic interactions between cycles and their combined role in Earth's climate system.
