GEOLOGIC MAP OF CALIFORNIA: A DIGITAL DATABASE

A digital version of the Geologic Map of California (Jennings, 1977) was completed by the California Division of Mines and Geology in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey. The map is a digital database, which was digitized from original scale (1:750,000) publication plates using ALACARTE, a menu-driven interface developed by the U.S. Geological Survey for ARC/INFO GIS software. It is a faithful digital representation of the geologic units, faults, and fold axes as shown on the published Geologic Map of California. However, some information, such as the names of geologic features as well as locations of volcanoes and cinder cones is not included. Geologic mapping is the foundation for any comprehensive study undertaken to evaluate earth science related societal and environmental issues. This database will provide a uniform digital geologic coverage for use in analytical applications and production of derivative maps at a statewide scale. The database is available in ARC/INFO and MapInfo formats.
