NSF PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN THE GEOSCIENCES

SINGER, Jill, Division of Undergraduate Education, National Sci Foundation, 4201 Wilson Blvd., Suite 835, Arlington, VA 22230, jsinger@nsf.gov

The National Science Foundation administers a number of programs that support undergraduate research in the geosciences. While many faculty are familiar with the REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program, other programs including RUI (Research at Undergraduate Institutions), STEMTP (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Teacher Preparation), CAREER, and CCLI (Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement) also support undergraduate research. This session will provide an overview of these programs and provide some examples of current and recently completed projects in the geosciences. General advice for writing competitive proposals and ways to support undergraduate research activities will also be provided.
