ELECTRONIC PUBLICATIONS: GROUNDWATER ATLAS OF KENTUCKY

Using widely used computer and Internet resources, we can now publish information electronically across the World Wide Web. This provides for nearly unlimited flexibility in the look and scope of our publications. By eliminating printing costs we can freely use color photographs, maps, images, and other graphics. With geographic information system (GIS) and graphics software, we can create maps in a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost of historical cartographic methods. An example of the power of these tools was realized at the Kentucky Geological Survey through the production of a groundwater atlas of Kentucky for the Water Resource Development Commission. The atlas consists of 120 county reports (for example, Groundwater Resources of Woodford County, Kentucky). These reports are available from the KGS Web site (www.uky.edu/KGS). Each report contains basic information on groundwater, a variety of color maps and photographs, and links to other related Web sites, including strategic water management plans for the area, Kentucky's Water Resources Information System (WRIS), hydrogeologic information, water-quality information, a map registry of water well-drillers, the KGS online library of hydrogeologic research reports, sources of GIS data, topographic and geologic maps, and aerial photographs.
