In 2002 the Geoscience Information Society approved the formation of a task force to address the issue of citation of geoscience data and collections by geoscientists. This effort was prompted by the National Research Council’s report "Geoscience Data and Collections: National Resources in Peril" which indicates that the lack of citation to unpublished materials such as geophysical datasets, well logs, field notes, and core collections has contributed to the impression that these materials are not sufficiently useful to be worth preserving. The Task Force has created a website with suggestions on how to cite unpublished materials in the geosciences and advocates for change within the geoscientific publishing community.
