IT'S HAPPENING IN BUFFALO BACKYARDS: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

SINGER, Jill, Dept. of Earth Sciences, Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY 14222, singerjk@buffalostate.edu

Undergraduate research with a local context can provide both traditional and non-traditional students with opportunities to address relevant, community-based geological and environmental problems. This poster will summarize some of the local research projects undertaken by Buffalo State students over the past ten years, including a summer interdisciplinary research program focusing on Buffalo's environmental history and funded by the NCUR/Lancy Initiative. Strategies for selecting appropriate projects, identifying and taking advantage of regional resources, and supporting students in interdisciplinary local environmental research projects will be presented.
