ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE OF TOXIC ELEMENTS IN LOESS OF THE MID-CONTINENT

SPENCER, Charles G., Department of Geosciences, Univ of Missouri - Kansas City, 420 Flarsheim Hall, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO 64110-2499, spencerc@umkc.edu

Results of analyses of loess samples collected at 17 locations along the Missouri and Kansas Rivers, reveal the presence of a suite of toxic elements, including uranium, thorium, cadmium, lead, arsenic and chromium. The areal distribution of loess, and loess-derived soils, presents the opportunity for migration of contaminants into streams, as both dissolved and suspended loads.
