GEOLOGY OF OIL AND GAS: EDUCATIONAL DEMONSTRATIONS

WIELENS, Hans and JAUER, Christopher, Natural Resources Canada, GSC Atlantic, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, P.O. Box 1006, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 4A2, Canada, hwielens@nrcan.gc.ca

The presentation will demonstrate in a practical way the geology of oil and gas. For example, we will show how oil and gas emerge from the rocks that contain the material that forms oil, by heating a small piece of such a rock in a test tube. The migration of the oil to a reservoir rock beneath or against a trap will be shown with the aid of a clear tube filled with water, marbles (enlarged sand grains) gas and engine oil. How traps form will be demonstrated with wooden models of sediment layers. Samples of crude oils produced from the well head will be available for inspection.
