GRAVITATIONAL AND MAGNETIC FIELDS ASSOCIATED WITH A POSSIBLE IMPACT STRUCTURE IN MISSISSIPPI

The Coglin Dome (or Mound) is a one kilometer diameter, nearly circular, topographic high with a central depression that is located near the border between Leake County and Neshoba County in east central Mississippi. A search for Native American artifacts produced negative results and there is no oral tradition associated with local tribes that would indicate that the mound was made or modified by humans.

As part of an investigation into the possibility of an impact origin for the Dome, detailed gravity and magnetic surveys were conducted on the dome and surrounding area. Normal corrections were made to the data and regional gravity and magnetic gradients were removed.

No significant residual gravity or magnetic anomaly patterns were observed.
