IMAGES OF VIRGINIA'S GEOLOGY: AN IMAGE DATABASE ON CD-ROM FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS

Radford University's geology multimedia lab has developed a new CD-ROM for teachers. This program, Images of Virginia's Geology, makes available to teachers hundreds of photographs and diagrams, including many from the Geology of Virginia CD-ROM series, in a searchable database. Geologic photographs came from the individual collections of geologists at the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and Radford University, as well as from industries and individuals. The database is immense; over 900 photographs and diagrams are presented in the program. Teachers can use the program as a presentation tool, or they can copy images for use in their own lecture presentations. The 600 x 800-pixel JPEG images on the CD-ROM are searchable in three ways. Users can access images by geologic concept, by geographic location, and by Virginia state Standards of Learning for Earth Science. Geologic concepts are defined. Geographic locations (by geologic province and by county) include maps to help teachers and students find the locations of image subjects. The project was funded by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Aggregates Association; the product is distributed to the public by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources.
