RICHARD R. PARIZEK THE PROFESSOR AND HIS INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE AND CAREER

LEAP, Darrell I., Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Purdue Univ, 1397 Civil Engineering Building, West Lafayette, IN 47906, dileap@purdue.edu

The historically-universal mission statement of major universities in the USA is Research, Teaching and Service. Today many institutions of higher learning have changed these descriptors, in the same order,to "Discovery, Learning and Engagement". Nevertheless, they mean the same for all practical purposes. The strongest emphasis today as in the past is on research or discovery. Many professors have found this emphasis to be all-consuming leaving lttle time or motivation for excelling in the other areas. However, Richard Parizek learned to deftly manage all three areas, making major contributions to all while enjoying life and his family as well as his over 100 graduate students and hundreds of undergraduates.

What motivates such a person? I conclude the following in order of importance: 1) Intense and unflagging fascination with science; 2) Superior physical and mental stamina; 3) Intense desire to help his country and the human race in general by applying his knowledge and skills to helping solve major environmental problems and educating young people to become successful scientists and professors; and finally, 4) Constant support at home from a devoted family.

His vast work and experience made him a great teacher and mentor. I greatly appreciate his very positive influence on my life and scientific career.
