TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: CONNECTING THE DOTS

MCLELLAND, Christine V., Geological Society of America, GSA Education and Outreach, GSA Headquarters, 3300 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301-9140 and PALMER, Allison R., Institute for Cambrian Studies, 445 N. Cedarbrook Road, Boulder, CO 80304, allison.palmer@comcast.net

The generation of future leaders, represented by today’s students, faces serious challenges because of the failure of many of us in the academic profession to effectively communicate the interconnectedness of the key ideas embodied in the issue of sustainability. A workshop based on GSA’s recently-completed CD-ROM “Understanding Sustainability” has attempted to rectify this. By using the series of essays, “Toward a Stewardship of the Global Commons”, the accompanying suggestions for ways to get the key ideas across to students were tested. Participants were also encouraged to suggest additional effective ways to communicate these ideas. The results of this exercise will be discussed.
