NEW 1:100,000-SCALE BEDROCK GEOLOGIC MAP OF VERMONT:STATE AND FEDERAL RESULTS FROM THE NATIONAL COOPERATIVE GEOLOGIC MAPPING PROGRAM

The new bedrock geologic map of the State of Vermont contains over 400 map units ranging from Mesoproterozoic to Lower Eocene and is based on extensive detailed and reconnaissance mapping at 1:12,000 to1:100,000 conducted over the past 30 years. The map retains much detail mapped at the larger scales. Although solidly grounded in the lithostratigraphic approach of the 1961 Centennial Geologic Map of Vermont, this map also elucidates the effects of the long continued and complex plate tectonic evolution of a classic polycyclic terrane. Derivative completed products include GIS digital open file maps of the Vermont Geological Survey and USGS, printed USGS GQ, and USGS I-Maps and Bulletins of the Vermont Geological Survey and topical papers. Extensive new U-Pb zircon, geochemical and paleontologic data supporting age assignments and correlations of map units will be released in future articles, bulletins, and professional papers. Colored versions of 5 separate review copy maps at 1:100,000-scale on display are: Mesoproterozoic rocks, Neoproterozoic to Upper Ordovician rocks, rocks of the Taconic allochthons, Silurian and Devonian rocks, and Mesozoic and younger rocks. Following review, and start of production, digital files will be made available by the State of Vermont. The printed map will consist of 3 1:100,000 –scale color sheets plus ancillary sheets for cross sections, tectonic maps and description of map units.
