GEOLOGIC MAP DISTRIBUTION VIA INTERNET AT THE NORTH CAROLINA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
The 7.5-minute, county, and other geologic maps (including the 1985 Geologic Map of North Carolina) that appear on this site were scanned at 300 dpi from published geologic maps primarily from NCGS publications. The resulting .tiff files were subsequently compressed using Mr. Sid® software. These images were georegistered using ArcMap® version 8.2. The Corpscon coordinate conversion software was used to determine NC State Plane coordinates that were used by ArcMap® to produce "world files" needed to display the georeferenced images using GIS software. Users may download all or part of a geologic map with accompanying world files.
Planned additions include geologic maps from theses and dissertations, federal publications, and current NCGS 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping from the STATEMAP program. Maps listed are also contributed to the U.S. Geological Surveys (USGS) National Geologic Map Database, and the USGS National Geologic Map Image Library.
