DIGITAL MAPPING OF THE SEDIMENTATION AND STRATIGRAPHY OF A COAL-ASH POND USING VIBRACORE AND GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR ANALYSIS

Vibracoring and ground penetrating radar were used to create digital maps and cross sections of the stratigraphy and sedimentation of a coal-ash pond. The study area is located in Carroll County, Kentucky in the abandoned ash pond at the 2500 MW Ghent coal-fired power plant. Twelve vibracores were collected from the 40-feet deep pond, with cores ranging from 31 to 39 feet in depth. Detailed stratigraphic profiles were constructed from the sampled vibracores to correlate slurried-ash sedimentation to Gilbert-type delta formation.
