WINDOW ON THE WORLD - EARTH IMAGES FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

NASA-JSC's Earth Observation Laboratory is responsible for cataloging and identifying images taken by astronauts while they are in space. These images constitute an online database that receives over 10 million hits a month. With over 475,000 images available that span 4 decades of space flight, the database has a detailed an expansive coverage of earth from space. The images are freely available to the general public and are an extremely useful tool for learning the geography of the earth, as an intern last summer, we learned how to interpret and catalog the images, as well as virtually traveling the entire earth in one summer. Information about the International Space Station that is relevant to the photography will be explained, as well as how the images are cataloged. The search engines on the website will be explained as well as the information available with each image. An image slideshow will be shown with geologically interesting features as well as images that are popular with the general public.
