MULTIPLE LEVELS OF ANTIEVOLUTIONISM

SCOTT, Eugenie C., National Ctr for Sci Education, 420 40th Street, Ste. 2, Oakland, CA 94609-2509, scott@ncseweb.org

Evolution is an important part of the high school science curriculum, but it is under attack in most parts of the United States. The main locus of antievolutionism is the local school district, but creationists have been active at the state and even national level as well. This presentation will analyze examples of all three levels of antievolutionism and put them into context with the evolving legal strategies of creationists. A full range of creationist strategies are employed, from local or state efforts to get creation science and/or intelligent design taught, to disclaiming evolution with oral statements or textbook stickers, to requiring nonexistent “evidence against evolution” to be taught.
