A MAGNETIC STUDY OF THE SALT SPRING HILLS, SOUTHERN DEATH VALLEY

Total field magnetic data were collected in the vicinity of the Salt Spring Hills in Southern Death Valley. This study is part of a larger study conducted by students at the University of New Orleans to define the structures associated with the intersection of the Garlock and Southern Death Valley fault zones. The magnetic data show an approximately 2 km by 1 km magnetic high over the intrusive rocks of the Salt Spring Hills and apparent fault boundaries on the southern and eastern margins of the intrusion. In the area of a former gold mine, the magnetic values change by more than 900 gammas within a few 10's of meters. This extreme gradient appears to mark the eastern fault boundary of the intrusion. New data collected during the winter field class is now being reduced and combined with the data collected during the previous year. Those combined data will be modeled to provide an interpretation of the subsurface.
