LUNDY, Sherman, NA, Basic Materials Corp, 101 BMC Drive, Elk Run Heights, IA 50707 and WALTERS, James C., Earth Science Dept, Univ of Northern Iowa, Latham Hall, Cedar Falls, IA 50614, lundy@basicmaterialscorp.com

Field trips should be active experiences involving students in collecting and analyzing data from their investigations in the field. The field trip can become an active research effort at any level, K-16; students may then be directed to use the data in presentations to other organizations within the community. Student participation in field trips can lead to collecting real time data from the field for effective use in understanding and resolving any number of environmental, community, or industrial concerns. Part of this presentation will examine a field trip project in which senior Earth Science Students under the direction of Dr. Jim Walters from UNI Earth Science Department and Hawkeye Community College Students in a Field Environmental Class worked with Black Hawk County, Iowa, Soil and Water District Commissioner, Sherman Lundy to complete a field investigation of a local watershed for a 319 EPA Grant Application.
