SUMMER SEMINAR FOR EARTH SCIENCE TEACHERS SPONSORED BY PURCHASE COLLEGE'S CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION (CSME)

CORFIELD, Peter W.R., CSME & Chemistry, Purchase College - SUNY, 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY 10577 and KLUGE, Steve, Earth Science, Fox Lane High School, Box 390, Route 172, Bedford, NY 10506, pwrc@ns.purchase.edu

With an emphasis on helping teachers become efficient and creative designers of their own curriculum materials, this 3 - 4 credit summer seminar provides earth science teachers with an array of student centered activities, including labs, worksheets and other learning materials that can be modified and built upon to fit participants’ specific needs. Participants cooperatively discuss and develop hands-on student activities and emphasis is placed on the exploration of internet sources of activities, information, and real-time data. The seminar includes half-day field trips to local areas of interest and an extended full day field trip to North Lake and Kaaterskill Falls in the Eastern Catskills (http://www.bedford.k12.ny.us/flhs/science/stevek/purchase/fieldtrip.html). Field trip topics include weathering and erosion systems (including stream processes and Quaternary geology), local geology and geologic history, topographic map interpretation, structural geology, GPS, and the development of successful student field trips. ESRT charts and diagrams are incorporated into field trip content, and materials used and developed during the seminar are archived on a course web site.
