COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS WITH THE NATIONAL PARKS

BENBOW, Ann, Alexandria, VA 22302-1502, aeb@agiweb.org

The American Geological Institute's (AGI) Outreach Department is working collaboratively with the National Park Service (NPS) on several projects, both for schools and for the general public. The first of these, Earth Science Week, is a national and international annual outreach effort to spread the word about the importance of the geosciences. The National Park Service both contributes materials to the Earth Science Week Toolkit each year and hosts events during the Week in the parks.

In a second cooperative effort, AGI and NPS are creating a poster series on the geology of the National Parks as well as a brochure tentatively entitled "The Nation's Rock Collection". Currently under development, these materials will be distributed widely to both formal (schools, colleges and universities) and informal venues (Parks, museums, science centers). The presentation will address the nature of these collaborations, as well as their expected effects on their target audiences.
